Remnants of a Supernova (2015)
Cast bronze medal - In collaboration with Jess Russell
All matter on Earth was once among the stars and thus no object is without history. Copper and tin, the primary elements of this bronze alloy, are produced in supernovae - the celestial explosion that occurs when a star exhausts its fuel. Stars are inherently poetic and profoundly beautiful; a constant in the course of man's understanding of the world. Entwined in centuries of myth, religion and science, they both represent and invoke questions of who we are and how we came to be. Although purposefully simple in design, the medal traverses time and space, existing as residue of distant places and historic happenings. It rests in the hand as tangible evidence of an astronomical phenomenon of a scale beyond human comprehension, yet simultaneously recording something acutely personal.
